Common Questions, Straight Answers

Everything you've wondered about AI automation, vibe coding, and getting started — answered without the jargon.

Getting Started

What is AI automation?

AI automation is the use of artificial intelligence to handle repetitive tasks automatically — without human intervention. Examples include sending appointment reminders, routing customer inquiries, dispatching technicians, and collecting payments. Instead of someone manually doing these steps, software powered by AI does them instantly, every time.

Do I need to know how to code to use AI automation?

No. Many of the best automation tools — like n8n, Make, and Zapier — are visual and require little to no coding. AI tools like Claude and ChatGPT have also made it possible to build working automations by describing what you want in plain English. This approach is called vibe coding.

What is vibe coding?

Vibe coding is building software or automations by describing what you want to an AI model in plain English, rather than writing code by hand. You act as the director — describing the problem, reviewing the output, and guiding the AI to refine it. It lowers the barrier to building real tools significantly.

How is First Steps in AI different from other AI sites?

This site is run by people actively building AI-powered products for real businesses. The team behind First Steps in AI built SendJob — a production automation system used by service businesses. Everything covered here is based on real experience, not theory or tutorials tested for 15 minutes.

AI for Service Businesses

How can AI help a service business like HVAC or plumbing?

AI automation can handle the communication and logistics that eat up time in service businesses: confirming appointments with customers, alerting dispatchers when a job comes in, notifying customers when a technician is enroute, and sending payment links when a job is complete. These can all be automated, reducing manual work and improving customer experience.

What is SendJob?

SendJob is an AI-powered backend automation product built by Nexus Found LLC for trades and field service businesses. It automates the complete job lifecycle — from the moment a job is created to final payment. Customers receive automatic text updates at every stage, dispatchers get instant alerts, and technicians can accept jobs from their phone. Built with n8n, Supabase, Twilio, and Stripe.

What automations should a service business set up first?

The three highest-impact automations for service businesses are: (1) automatic appointment confirmation texts to customers, (2) dispatcher alerts when a new job comes in, and (3) payment link delivery at job completion. These three alone eliminate a significant amount of manual follow-up and reduce missed payments.

Can AI replace my dispatcher or office staff?

AI automation handles the repetitive, time-sensitive communication tasks — the stuff that interrupts your staff dozens of times a day. It does not replace human judgment for complex scheduling decisions, customer complaints, or situations that need context. Think of it as giving your team a system that handles the routine so they can focus on the exceptions.

Building with AI

What tools do I need to start building AI automations?

A practical starting stack is: n8n (workflow automation), Supabase (database), and Claude or ChatGPT (for building logic and generating code). For messaging, add Twilio (SMS) or Resend (email). For payments, Stripe. You can start with just n8n and Claude and add other tools as your project requires.

What is n8n and why does this site recommend it?

n8n is an open-source workflow automation platform. It lets you connect apps, APIs, and databases using a visual workflow editor — with the option to add custom code when needed. It is recommended here because it is self-hostable (you own your data), more flexible than Zapier for complex workflows, and works well with AI tools.

How do I use Claude to build automations?

Describe what you want to build in plain English. Be specific: name the tools involved, describe the trigger (what starts the workflow), and describe each step. For example: "I need an n8n workflow that triggers when a new row is inserted in Supabase, sends a Twilio SMS to the customer, and updates a status column." Iterate based on the output. Most working workflows take 3–5 exchanges.

What is the difference between n8n, Zapier, and Make?

All three are workflow automation platforms. Zapier is the easiest to start with but the most limited and expensive at scale. Make (formerly Integromat) is more powerful than Zapier with better visual design. n8n is the most flexible, self-hostable, and developer-friendly — but has a steeper learning curve. For complex, custom automations, n8n is recommended. For simple integrations, any of the three work.
